Week 3

Dear Friends,
I am sorry that this is late, but I had a family emergency. I am behind in my postings and I am trying to catch up. - Rachael

Here is my action research plan.

I have changed the topic of my action research after much thought. I am now planning on studying the effects of group size on small group RTI instruction in reading for K-3 grade students. Will a group of three or less be more or less effective than a group of four to six students? That is my question. I am also interested to see which groups are more effective (push-in groups, where the reading instructional specialist or assistant goes in to the classroom for instruction or pull-out groups, where students leave the classroom to have their RTI reading instruction). However, my main focus will be on the size of the groups. I am planning on using TPRI, benchmark assessments, and progress monitoring to help me gather the data needed for my project. This project will last all year and I hope to be able to tell by the end of this school year, which type of grouping is better (at least for my particular campus).

  1. I think your topic is great. We must group students in a way that is best suited to their individual learning needs. This focus will be a great benefit to your campus and I am interested in learning about the results. I think that you will find that the smaller groups are better for the majority of the students because they get more individualized attention. I hope that everyone is doing better in your family and keep up the great work!

  2. Rachael: I am sorry hear about you family emergency. Hopefully, everything is fine now. What really catch my attention in your project is that you are going to resolve or at least try new strategies on something that is a real situation in your campus. I wish the best on your research! Good luck!

  3. I am very interested in this topic as it is close to my heart. How will you make considerations in your research for the push-in teachers that are going in to more teacher friendly environments? Is this something you will be able to consider at all? I know when I was a push in teacher, there were classroom situations where it was very difficult for me to have success. Just something to be aware of! Good luck!
